Travel Essentials
Important information and guides to help you prepare for your journey to Sri Lanka.
Sim Cards
Local SIM cards are available at Bandaranaike International Airport on arrival and at mobile operator stores across the island. Dialog, Mobitel, and Hutch offer tourist SIM packages with data bundles. Bring your passport for registration.
Dress Code
Sri Lanka is a conservative country. When visiting temples, mosques, or religious sites, cover your shoulders and knees. Remove shoes before entering sacred spaces. Lightweight, modest clothing is recommended for most sightseeing.
Sri Lankan Foods
Must-try dishes include Rice and Curry (the national staple), Hoppers (bowl-shaped pancakes), String Hoppers, Kottu Roti, and Lamprais. Sri Lankan cuisine is rich in spices — let your guide know if you prefer milder options.
Local Street Food
Street food is a highlight of any Sri Lanka trip. Look out for Isso Vadai (prawn fritters), Pol Roti (coconut flatbread), Isso Thel Dala (spicy fried prawns), and fresh tropical fruits like mango, pineapple, and woodapple.
Drinks
King Coconut (Thambili) is the island's natural energy drink — refreshing and widely available. Ceylon Tea is world-famous; visit a tea estate in Nuwara Eliya for a tasting. Avoid tap water and stick to bottled or filtered water.
Airport Arrival Guide
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is located in Katunayake, about 30 km north of Colombo. On arrival, complete immigration, collect baggage, and proceed through customs. Pre-arranged airport transfers are recommended. Currency exchange and ATMs are available in the arrivals hall.
